    Motet… 2012 what’s in your wallet?

themotetnewyears12 FURTHUR NYE-APE web 10-11-12It’s the most wonderful time of the year and it continues with Kwanzaa and the end of the year concert mania known as the New Year’s eve shows.  Continuing a long tradition of ‘one show is just not enough’ many bands now have a run of three or four shows to close out one year and usher in another.

People will be jamming all over the nation with Phish in New York city, Widespread Panic in Charlotte, Leftover Salmon in St. Louis and Chicago and Furthur in SCInye12San Francisco.   It is amazing with all the jamming going on around the country that we still have so many options for celebratory fun here in Colorado.

The big shows in our book are String Cheese Incident at the First Bank Center, Yonder Mountain String Band at the Boulder theater and The Motet at the Fox.  The entire Yonder run is sold out but you may still find some pre 31st tickets for SCI or the Motet.  And if you don’t plan on heading out to see those bands there are plenty of other bands in smaller venues that offer up just as much fun.  Check out this list and wherever you end up, be safe, choose a designated driver or let RTD take you home as they are free to ride on the 31st starting at 7 p.m..  Happy New Year!

  • The Motet talk Parliament Funkadelic Halloween shows

    Previously published at www.timescall.com

Colorado band The Motet are geared up for this year’s Halloween shows where the band will cover the music of Parliament Funkadelic. The Motet’s holiday shows are wildly popular with their local fans and the Boulder Theater show is already sold out. This Saturday’s show at The Ogden in Denver is also already sold out and it is no wonder with the band staging a 14 member band including vocalist and keyboardist Nigel Hall who only last year performed with The Warren Haynes Band on Halloween in Denver.

We recently caught up with the band at one of their rehearsal studios preparing for the shows. The Motet’s Dave Watts. Joey Porter and Garrett Sayers talk with Times-Call, Prairie Mountain Media reporter Quentin Young before a rehearsal. Band members also videoed Ryan Jalbert, Gabe Mervine, Matt Pitts, Dan Schwindt and Kimberly Dawson Produced by Alan Crandall. For ticket information visit www.themotet.net

  • Nedfest ~ Salmon Eggs ~ The Motet ~ Friday August 26, 2011

Editor’s note: This is the next installment in our series of photographer Lynn Richter’s coverage of last year’s NedFest. Tickets are still on sale for this year’s festival. Of note, The Motet has played NedFest more than any other band. Enjoy.

    “Shady grove, my little love
    Shady grove, I know
    Shady grove, my little love
    I’m bound for shady grove”

    Shady Grove – Traditional

Finally got my computer running again………..back to day one of Nedfest.

The Great American Taxi segued nicely into Salmon Eggs…………the old guard to the next generation………..Salmon Eggs nailed Shady Grove.

The Motet is a bit too Funky Horny for my taste………….but the crowd loved them……….they played a long set as the sun went down……..I went back to the hotel to get a different camera and warmer clothes…….the crowd really grew during The Motet set in anticipation of the closing act.

It was tough to miss Dark Star Orchestra at First Avenue………..hope there is a tape of the show.

    Support local live music!!

  • LoHi Music Festival Luau on tap Saturday with The Motet and many more

It is a great time in Colorado… we are breaking records with the weather recording the hottest July on record. Now for a hot August and not just weather wise. The music coming up in the first week is amazingly hot.

Yarmony Grass, Telluride Jazz Celebration, String Music Festival, Crestfest, Bluegrass and Beer Festival all are on tap this weekend around the state of Colorado. However if you are in Denver the place to be Saturday is the LoHi Music Festival and Luau.

Saturday’s LoHi Music Festival has a fantastic lineup and is the best bang for your buck around. The lineup features bands like The Motet, Particle featuring Michaelf Kang (of The String Cheese Incident), Air Dubai, The Heavy Pets, Euforquestra, Dubskin, Garrett Sayers Trio, Filthy Children, Rob Drabkin, Human Agency and Bryan Benner. Even better

Ryan Jalbert with The Motet at last year’s New West Fest.

it is a Luau with beach attire recommended. From the festival web siteJoin us on Saturday, August 4th, 2012 for a Denver style “Luau”! Pig roast, live music, art and a fantastic beer selection in the heart of Denver’s Lower Highlands.”

This will be a chance to check out national touring acts like The Heavy Pets, Particle and our very own The Motet and also take in some local favorites like Euforquestra, Dubskin and the Garrett Sayers Trio.

Here is a tip for you, if you head down to Highlands Tap Burger tonight and catch the LoHi Music Festival pre-party featuring the Heavy Pets, you can get “fee free” tickets to Saturdays event for $20… that is way less than a dollar a performer… you do the math.

We will see you at the show!

  • Herbie Hancock Tribute tonight at the Boulder Theater

I have heard very good things about this show with many members of the Motet performing a tribute to legendary Herbie Hancock!  From the Boulder Theater web site:

“Featuring Motet members Dave Watts, Joey Porter, Garrett Sayers, Dan Schwindt and Dominic Lalli of Big Gigantic, this band will be playing the funkiest, greasiest, nastiest music from the 1970’s songbook of Herbie Hancock. Get ready for a night of heavy improvisation, deep grooves, and extended solos as this band explores Herbie’s greatest material from the heyday of jazz-funk fusion. Do not miss this ultimate experience of music for the body and mind!”

    See you at the show!
