  • Pete Kartsounes Band Winter Beach Party (photos ~ video)

    Pete Kartsounes

The PKB Electric “Winter Beach Party” was one of those events you might miss if you blinked… and it is too bad if you did.  Held in early January, on a snowy Saturday night it marked the first time the Pete Kartsounes Band headlined the Fox Theatre.   The middle of winter beach party was a great idea and even offered up performances by Smack Thompson and Dr. Phil Good.  The evening had a special feeling with many of the audience in festive beach attire.

For this special night Pete had assembled a great group of local talent including Matt Flaherty – Guitars (Hot Soup), Paul Murin – Guitars (Phix), Phil Johnson – Organ, Keys, Trumpet, Vox (Jet Edison), Brian Adams – Bass (Great American Taxi) and Ryan Sapp – Drums (PKB).

We sat on this video since January due to Pete leaving the mainland and heading to the Islands where he was inspired and worked on even more music projects.  Pete met another musician created a group named Manala and made an album.   From Manala’s Facebook page “Within 3 weeks of meeting one another on Kauai, Pete Kartsounes & Katlyn Dawn have created their first album.”

Well Kartsounes is back now and gigging in the area, catch him if you can because soon he is hitting the road for festival season.  For more information visit www.petekmusic.com.

Check out this cool video of a beautiful song called “Magic & The Moment.”

  • Kung Fu and Smooth Money Gesture to play Fox Theatre

    Smooth Money Gesture

Thursday night you can find me at the Fox Theatre checking out some of my favorite local musicians in the bands Smooth Money Gesture and the Matt Flaherty Band. I have been looking forward to this show since SMG announced their 30 plus stop tour with the Fox being one of their local dates. SMG played last night in Breckenridge and will play tonight at Hodi’s in Fort Collins.

As if checking out our local bands for a low low ticket price was not enough… bonus, SMG will be sharing the limelight with the band Kung Fu, a Jazz/funk/fusion quintet from New Haven.

I have already told you a bit about Smooth Money Gesture, I believe they are set to be one of the next big

    Matt Flaherty

bands from Nederland, Colorado. They would be worth the price of admission alone but then you add The Matt Flaherty Band and you have a party. Flaherty is the kick ass guitarist for the Pete Kartsounes Band (PKB) and Hot Soup. Now top all of that off with another set of high energy jams from Kung Fu and you have a recipe for a fantastic time!

I had a chance to catch some Kung Fu action last Friday when they warmed up for The Motet, their hard driving funky jazz lit up the stage at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom. But don’t take my word for it check out the small taste in the video below… and then get your full dose this Thursday at the Fox or if tonight at Hodi’s.

Here is some Smooth Money Gesture from last year… see you at the Fox!

  • Dr. Phil Good prescribes a good time (Video)

    Phil Dyer & Matt Flaherty

Dr. Phil good was the second band to hit the stage for the PKB Winter Beach Party held at the Fox Theatre, Saturday, Jan. 7. Dr. Phil Good took the stage after a rousing performance by the first band Smack Thompson. Once on stage the doctor had a prescription for fun.

The band is fronted by guitarist/vocalist Phil Dyer. Joining him is Hot Soup’s and PKB’s guitarist/vocalist Matt Flaherty and bassist Otis Lande. Also sitting in for the beach party set was Phil Johnson on keys, Alex Johnson on drums and Scott Parker Mast on percussion.

I have had the opportunity to catch the good Doctor on several occasions and I have to say this night they were on fire. Their set rocked from start to finish and I recommend that if you get a chance to see Dr. Phil Good that you do… you won’t be disappointed. I am hoping the band will get a headlining slot in one of Boulders larger theaters soon so more people can get out to see the band.

Check out this little video nugget of jam:

  • PKB to headline at the Fox Theatre on Saturday

By Alan Crandall, previously published at the DailyCamera.com

PKB Band to headline at the Fox

Well, is it warm enough for you? It is January in Colorado so guess what, just in time for the weekend we are on tap to get more snow. Yep, that’s right, once again our wonderful Colorado weather is kind to the skiing folks and plans to dump in the mountains and we may even see some of the white stuff here on the Front Range.

If you like the warm weather though, there’s no need to despair… I have some good news. The Fox Theatre is hosting a Winter Beach Party. This is not just any beach party, this party is featuring some great local bands and hot jams. Smack Thompson and Dr. Phil Good will get things warmed up, then headlining at the Fox, for the first time, the Pete Kartsounes Band (PKB) will turn the heat up even more.

Here is a clip from the Winter Beach Party Facebook invite:

“This is PKB’s 1st HEADLINING PERFORMANCE at the FOX THEATER and its gonna be one hell of a Saturday night party in Boulder!! We are throwing down the beach theme on this one so bring your “tiki” attire and come git down with us in Hawaiian style. Supporting the show will be good friends Dr. Phil Good and Smack Thompson laying down some serious groovy tunes. There WILL be some VERY fancy guests at this one friends……Not a bad way to start the NEW YEAR!”

These guys really rock so get ready for some fun times, wear your beach attire and get ready to party! I will see you there!
