  • The John K. Band to play three night run at Quixote’s True Blue

    Photos by Gabriel Jones

    John Kadlecik

Born during the Summer of Love, Furthur guitarist/vocalist and co-founder of the Dark Star Orchestra John Kadlecik has spent much of his life dedicated to music. In school Kadlecik started with the study of classical violin, soon caught the rock-n-roll bug and picked up the guitar and mandolin. His Midwest upbringing landed him in Chicago as a young adult playing in many different bands. After a short stint in college he was introduced to the music of the Grateful Dead and the rest, as they say, is history.

While touring with DSO for nearly 12 years Kadlecik picked up the reputation as an amazing guitarist/vocalist and DSO shows sold out regularly around the nation. During this time he also played numerous other bands including a bluegrass band. The Mix with Melvin Seals was maybe his most notable side project, scoring a record contract and touring nationally in 2004. In 2009 Kadlecik scored the guitar vocal position in the former Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh’s new band called Furthur.

It was at this point that the John K. Band was formed. Playing mostly in the Washington DC area the idea was to “go to a gig, play a concert and that night sleep in my own bed,” said Kadlecik. The John K. Band has a large following back east. They have a rainbow panted VW micro-tour-bus and can regularly be found playing events and shows in the area. A quick YouTube search will reveal dozens of videos of the band lead by who many describe as a really nice guy and very talented musician.

The John K. Band will be performing in Denver starting tonight at Quixote’s True Blue. This is the first opportunity for Colorado fans to catch a band that many back east already know not to miss. For more information visit www.johnkmusic.net.

  • Good Gravy!

    Guest review by Judd Golden

“I can’t wait to get back home to Colorful Colorado” summed up a great evening of music when Ft. Collins’s Good Gravy brought their high energy sound to Boulder’s Fox Theatre on March 8. This line from one of the five-piece band’s many original songs echoed what most of the enthusiastic crowd knows: Colorado’s jamgrass music scene is the best in America, and this band is one not to be missed.

After a hot jam-trance opening set by The Mahli Llama & Stan Sutton, Sutton joined Good Gravy to start their long single electric set with tight guitar solos and extended jams, which blended well with the percussion-heavy tunes that hang onto the “grass” sound through Ross Montgomery’s furious mandolin picking. After Sutton stepped aside, the band kept the crowd dancing with a high-energy setlist with a few covers – including a Devo tune! The group has released its music on a self-titled, debut studio album and on a live recording featuring recent live performances. Another studio effort is on the way in 2012.

Good Gravy plays tonight at the Aggie Theatre in Fort Collins. For more information visit www.goodgravygrass.com.

  • The Matt Flaherty Trio to play in Lyons tonight

    Matt Flaherty

Yep, that’s right. The Matt Flaherty Trio is playing in Lyons this evening at the Pizza Bar 66 starting at 9:30pm. No, not Hot Soup with Flaherty on lead guitar, they warmed up for the Funky Meters Thursday night at the Fox Theatre and kicked ass I might add. No Not the Matt Flaherty Band, who opened up for Smooth Money Gesture and Kung Fu last month at the Fox. This is the Matt Flaherty Trio with Ryan Sapp on Drums and Great American Taxi/DeadPhish Orchestra bassist Brian F. Adams laying down the hard driving bass rifts. Well you know how it is when you shred on the guitar as much as Flaherty, you need to share the jams, fusion and grooves where ever you can.

There are actually several cool events tonight (as usual) in the area… I would check the Frozen Dead Guy Days Facebook page and Website to see what venue and bands survived the wind.

My other picks for a good time tonight are:
Cornmeal, Hot Buttered Rum at the Ogden Theatre in Denver
Jaden Carlson at Shine in Boulder
    Snowball Music Festival, in Avon
Ani Di Franco at the Boulder Theater (Sold Out)

All of these shows are worth the price of admission and the drive.

Check out this Matt Flaherty Band video from last month when they opened for SMG and Kung Fu. Pete Goldberg of SMG, Phil Johnson of Jet Edison, Chase on sax and Joel trombone are sitting in with the band. See you at the shows.

  • Moe. ‘brings it’ to the Boulder Theater for a second night of jams

Moe.’s second night at the Boulder Theater, Saturday Feb. 11, seemed to me to be even more jammy than the first, if that is even possible. The venue was packed with all the way to the top with audience members dancing in the isles of the balcony. It was a great show in a cool venue, I hope they return soon. Below are photo from the second night, for photos from the Friday show click here.
