August saw the return of NedFest, Nederland’s annual music festival and the first festival since the passing of its founder “Michigan” Mike Torpe. When the festival gates opened on Friday everyone, vendors and staff alike had smiles and were dedicated to continuing on the Nederland music tradition, now in its 14th year. The music of the first day was a fantastic mix of bluegrass and jam grass into full on rock and roll. It rained a bit but for the most part was a picture perfect day at the festival. The night ended with the JGB band featuring Melvin Seals and a large audience of festifarians enjoying the night.
The Following days revealed that instead of one person doing the job of ten, ten people did those jobs just as well. The festival lives on and we could not be happier. Even with the Kinfolk Celebration in Lyons and Reggae on the Rocks in Morrison, NedFest thrived. We look forward to future NedFest and are already making plans for next year… the 15 annual music festival in Nederland, Colorado. Here are some photos from C. Alan Crandall and A video of the Sunday “Super Group” from our friend Steve! Enjoy. We think Mike would be proud of this year’s event and how well the crew did in carrying on this wonderful festival.

Thanks to our friend and archivist Steve we have some great views from this year’s NedFest. Look for more videos in the next week or so from many of this year’s artists. Here we have a great HD video from a tripod mounted camera with a soundboard patch. Enjoy.
Editors Note: We are pleased to be able to bring you an installment from photographer Lynn Richter’s coverage of the Grateful Dead, this special edition marks the 25th Anniversary of the band’s visit to Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado. This is #17 in a series, with a little luck we may publish some more from this series. A special thanks to Lynn Richter for sharing. Enjoy.
“When it seems like the night will last forever And there’s nothing left to do but count the years When the strings of my heart start to sever And stones fall from my eyes instead of tears
I will walk alone by the black muddy river And dream me a dream of my own I will walk alone by the black muddy river And sing me a song of my own And sing me a song of my own”
“Black Muddy River” – Robert Hunter & Jerry Garcia
Edition # 17 in my “From the Shrine” series……………it was twenty five years ago today……….The Grateful Dead at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison Colorado.
1987 was a good year for seeing the Grateful Dead……….10 shows………….three shows for Chinese New Year in San Francisco……..two shows for my 40th Birthday in Chicago………….couple shows at Alpine and finally three shows at Red Rocks……….my only Grateful Dead shows at Red Rocks. The Grateful Dead were on top of their game………….In the Dark and a Touch of Grey had rewarded them with well deserved recognition and sold out show’s.
Red Rocks shows and eventually all Grateful Dead shows blend together in my mind………….waiting in line for hours to get in……..always wondering if this was the “right” line……….meeting old and new friends………then in a few minutes you are into this spectacular space…….wait a couple more hours for the music………..then the magic of the show………never a bad show and some were spectacular……..breaking free of the bounds of reality to a place that only Jerry could take you………….over in a moment………..back to planning for the next show. Forever grateful for the tapers and the record keeping of Deadheads……….look at those set lists, listen to the shows and then you know what really happened on the rocks in 1987…………it wasn’t just a dream. http://archive.org/details/gd87-08-11.sbd.miller.14944.sbeok.shnf http://archive.org/details/gd1987-08-12.aud.painoman.17354.sbeok.shnf http://archive.org/details/gd87-08-13.sbd.larson.21348.sbeok.shnf
